This salt-fired jug, which I made a couple years ago, is a tribute to Bill Neeley (deceased) of Santa Barbara, CA. He taught pottery classes at the city college, which my parents took; this was my introduction to pottery. Bill also had a vineyard and made wine, which he sold in hand-thrown jugs.

Fairs and shows During the month of May, I will be showing a selection of salt-fired pottery at the Artists' Collective in Elk, from a recent firing and from some previous firings in a number of different salt kilns.
Salt-firing is an older technique, developed in Germany around the year 1400. The ware is put into the kiln with only a liner glaze on the inside. The outside may be decorated with slips. When the kiln gets about to temperature (around 2300 degrees F.), salt is thrown into the kiln. The salt vaporizes, and the sodium in the salt combines chemically with the silica and alunima of the clay to form a glass, or glaze on the pot. The show will be at the Artists' Collective in Elk, 6031 S. Hwy. 1, Elk, California, between the post office and Queenie's restaurant. The gallery is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. I will be having a reception for my show on 2nd Sat., May 10th, 3 to 5 pm., with food and beverages. |
